Apple-Pear Crisp

Apples and pears come together in this essential Fall dessert, pairing tender fruit, with a crunchy oatmeal topping.

Apple-pear crisp recipe from @bakedbyrachel A must make Fall dessert!

Were you one of the many millions of people attempting to watch the Apple event yesterday?

Add me to the list of people having trouble viewing. I thought it was just me for the first half hour. Annoyed. In the kitchen, whipping up this fabulous apple-pear crisp, with the video cutting out on me repeatedly. Not that I needed to know about the phone or any other releases. I already knew I’d be upgrading my phone soon because I can only handle cracks in the screen for so long!

It was more that I just expected it to work and not repeatedly fail on me. We have become so accustomed to things just working that when they don’t, it’s the end of the world – in a totally exaggerated fashion of course.

At least I had this crisp to enjoy and ease away my annoyance over broken technology.

Apple-pear crisp recipe from @bakedbyrachel A must make Fall dessert!

Every year I go apple crisp and apple pie crazy. I can’t get enough. It’s the best time of the year.

I decided to switch things up this year and make it an apple-pear crisp. Two absolutely essential Fall fruits that pair great together. Tender and flavorful fruit, coated in cinnamon and brown sugar, with a crunchy oatmeal topping.

For an extra special treat, top it off with homemade caramel sauce or serve with homemade vanilla bean ice cream!

Add this apple-pear crisp to your Fall baking plans!

Yield: Serves 4-6

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Cook Time: 45 minutes

Total Time: 1 hour

Apple Pear Crisp

Apples and pears come together in this essential Fall dessert, pairing tender fruit, with a crunchy oatmeal topping.

1/4C light brown sugar
1/4C all purpose flour
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2C old fashioned oats
6Tbsp cold butter

4C apples
2C pears
2 tsp lemon juice
2 Tbsp all purpose flour
1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/2C light brown sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 350°F.

Prepare oatmeal topping. In a medium bowl combine brown sugar, oatmeal, flour and cinnamon. Using a pastry blender, cut in butter until only small pieces remain. Set aside.

Peel and slice apples and pears into 1/4-inch slices. Toss with lemon juice to prevent browning while continuing to work.

In a medium bowl, combine remaining flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, brown sugar and vanilla. Add to apples and pears, tossing to coat.

Transfer to an 8x8 square baking dish. Bake for 45 minutes or until fruit is tender and oatmeal topping is crisp.

Serve with optional vanilla ice cream, whipped cream or caramel sauce.

This looks amazing! I’m always nervous to use the wrong oats and screw up a recipe. Is this normal old fashioned oats or the quick oats? Thanks!

    • Rachel — September 28th, 2014 @ 9:27 am

The recipe states to use old fashioned oats. Enjoy! :)

Can I use apple pie filling as a short cut?

    • Rachel — September 30th, 2014 @ 7:30 am

I personally wouldn’t as the apples are already so tender. As for the serving amount. I’d recommend another recipe that is already planned for a crowd, but make two batches: apple crisp for a crowd.

Oh my goodness. I commented the other day asking about oats (which I could have figured out if I read all of the words. Sorry!) and made this tonight and it is unbelievably delicious! Not too sweet, not runny, just perfect. And you can really taste the fruit. I used 5 cortland apples (they were the cute small guys) and 3 ripe Bosc pears. I got lucky with finding some ripe pears at the troll infested grocery store down the street so you should get lucky if you shop at a civilized establishment that actually carries cauliflower on a regular basis. Thanks for sharing this! Everyone make this immediately if you have a functioning heart and brain.
